Crayola

Packaging up nostalgia and my childhood

Crayola is the number 1 brand for creativity, pretty much around the world at this point. It definitely was for me as a kid. I can still smell that waxy goodness before it hit the newsprint. It was a true dream come true to start my career at such an amazing place doing what I love! While working at Crayola I was able to learn how to create package die-lines, use a CAD machine, create world class toy packaging for product lines, learn how to carry through on a product line’s design, and I was even able to have an impact outside of the typical design side of the house by setting up their in-house photo studio for product and lifestyle shoots, and a media server with the creative director.

CRAYOLA BEGINNINGS and MY FIRST LINE

The Crayola “Beginnings” and “My First” product lines were some of the first products I touched outside of licensing with Disney, Marvel, and Nickelodeon. I was able to work alongside the designer for the line, helping to create package designs, art direct photo shoots, go on press checks, and ultimately shift from the “Beginnings” brand to the “My First” branding. It was a great experience in that it landed me with some of the best learnings as a package designer and just as a creative that still influences my career today. Virtually more than half of the designers I work with now have never been on a press check or know how it works when using Pantone colors for consumer brands. Below are some of the packages I designed, press-checked, and even photographed for use in global advertising.

EVERYTHING ELSE

I was able to work on so many things while at Crayola and be exposed to the world of toy and packaging design. Here’s a few of the things I designed that were more one offs, but still super fun!
